Official Transcript of the Remarks by Nicaraguan Co-President Daniel Ortega on 19-July-2026
This propaganda spread by the US government (which supports actual dictatorships around the world) has been widely regurgitated by the corporate media.But they are all taking out of context comments made by Nicaragua’s Co-President Daniel Ortega.Below I have posted a screenshot of the official transcript of the speech given by Ortega on 19 July 2026, alongside my translation. The full context clearly shows that Ortega was discussing the history of US interference in Nicaragua, and how the US government funds right-wing political parties to try to overthrow the Sandinista Front. (This should not come as a surprise to anyone who knows the basic history of Nicaragua and the CIA’s Contra terror war in the 1980s.)
In 2018, the US government sponsored a very violent coup attempt in Nicaragua, which was extremely traumatic for the population.Ortega was saying that “there will be no more elections” for these coup-plotting right-wing political parties that are funded by the US government.
Nicaragua is defending its sovereignty and preventing the US empire from installing another puppet regime like the corrupt Somoza dictatorship, which Washington propped up for decades, on the corpses of countless Nicaraguans.
The US empire has invaded Nicaragua multiple times, militarily occupied the country, waged a terror war, imposed sanctions, funded the opposition, and meddled nonstop in its elections. The Sandinista government is saying that that history of foreign interference is over. No more.
The Trump Administration and the international community will not stand by as the Murillo-Ortega dictatorship deepens repression at home and manufactures instability that threatens U.S. national security. Ortega’s pledge to abolish elections in Nicaragua proves his cowardice and fear of the Nicaraguan people’s will.

Nicaragua’s Co-President Rosario Murillo gave a speech in which she emphasized that, YES, Nicaragua will still hold elections.
The reports in the corporate media claiming otherwise, echoing US government propaganda, are fake news. This is what Co-President Murillo said:
“The history of the electoral processes here were established, designed, directed, and guided by the United States. That is history. That is the kind of election that will never return to Nicaragua.”
That kind of election that goes against the people will not come back, will never return to Nicaragua. Elections, yes, but our own elections, and when we say our own, we mean elections of our blessed people, designed and organized based on our national sovereignty, based on our national dignity, to elect the best Nicaraguans, those who know about struggle and honor. Blessed, free, dignified, sovereign elections”.

In short, Nicaragua is NOT cancelling elections; it is creating a sovereign electoral system that prevents the US empire from meddling in Nicaragua’s internal affairs, to block Washington from imposing a puppet regime (like the US has done across Latin America).
