Brazilian Organizations Call on the Government to Support Venezuela Against US Military Threats

A large group of Brazilian social organizations, unions, and political entities issued a document on Thursday, August 28, addressed to President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva and Foreign Minister Mauro Vieira, expressing their concern over the recent US military maneuvers in the Caribbean, very close to the Venezuelan coast.

The document, signed by more than 40 institutions, including the Central of Popular Movements, the Landless Rural Workers’ Movement (MST), and the National Union of Students (UNE), along with ALBA Brazil Chapter, denounces the deployment of warships as a direct threat to a sovereign country. According to the signatories, these actions seek to “destabilize Venezuela’s internal order” and generate tensions throughout the region.

The statement also rejects US President Donald Trump’s statements against Venezuelan President Nicolás Madauro, which they describe as “unfounded” and “contrary to the principles of peaceful coexistence among nations.” For the Brazilian organizations, Washington is attempting to revive belligerent rhetoric that violates international law and fosters instability.

“It is evident that these military threats are intended to incite internal tensions in Venezuela,” the statement says, warning that a policy of aggression would only aggravate the situation. In contrast, the movements insist that conflicts must be resolved through dialogue and respect for the self-determination of peoples.

The signatories recalled that Latin America and the Caribbean were declared a “Zone of Peace” at the CELAC Summit held in Havana in 2014, a commitment that obliges the countries of the region to reject any form of external military intervention. “The continent must unite against any attempt at external intervention,” the document emphasizes.

Finally, the organizations called on the Brazilian government to publicly reaffirm its support for Venezuela, highlighting the historic ties of friendship and cooperation between the two nations. “The pursuit of harmony and the strengthening of diplomatic ties must always be priorities,” they emphasized, while calling on Brazil to defend peace and sovereignty against what they consider an imperialist threat.
