A piece of history: The USSR and Mexico established diplomatic relations 100 years ago.

From the Russian MFA

🇷🇺🇲🇽 Exactly 100 years ago — on August 4, 1924 — diplomatic relations were established between the USSR and Mexico.

On this day in 1924, Mexico became the first Latin American country established diplomatic relations with the Soviet Union, on the basis of full equality of rights, respect for each other’s sovereignty and independence, and non-interference in the other’s internal affairs.

👨‍💼 In 1924, the first Soviet Ambassador, Stanislav Pestkovsky, was posted to Mexico. Pestkovsky served in that country for two years, and played a crucial role in strengthening ties between our countries, fostering interest and sympathy to the Soviet Union among Mexican public, and promoting cultural and research exchanges.

In 1925, Vladimir Mayakovsky visited Mexico. Following that trip, he published a cycle of poems about America and a full account of his travels, My Discovery of America.

“The spirit of singularity and hospitality attached me to Mexico. Everything I have described is done here by extremely hospitable, pleasant and obliging people”,

— the poet would later write in his book.

In 1926, Stanislav Pestkovsky was replaced by one of the first women ambassadors in the world, Alexandra Kollontai. When she was honoured with the Order of the Aztec Eagle, Mexico’s highest decoration awarded to foreigners, in 1944 (when she was serving as Ambassador to Sweden), the Mexican Foreign Ministry said that by doing so, the government wished to emphasise its high appreciation of the work done by Her Excellency Alexandra Kollontai for the rapprochement between the two countries.

“Mexico is rich in great, strong people. Ardent, resilient, and courageous. The local demigod Quetzalcoatl, a worshipped hero or leader from some distant ages of Mayan culture, is a bearer and embodiment of high antique culture. He was a wise man who taught his people how to cultivate their land, and how to build a life for the good of all”.

— Alexandra Kollontai.

Today, Mexico is one of the key Latin American partners of Russia, both in regional and international affairs. The dynamic bilateral interaction is based on long-standing bonds of friendship and mutually beneficial cooperation between the two countries, genuine respect for each other’s interests, and similar or overlapping approaches to most issues on the current agenda.

🤝 Russia’s Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov held talks (https://t.me/MFARussia/19133) with Mexican Foreign Minister Alicia Bárcena Ibarra in February 2024 on the sidelines of the G20 Foreign Ministers’ meeting in Rio de Janeiro. Both Officials reaffirmed the importance of Russian-Mexican relations. They also discussed ways to deepen bilateral political dialogue, expand trade, economic, cultural and humanitarian cooperation, as well as to improve the legal framework.
