Election: South Africa
We’re moving closer to the weekend that is the deadline for South Africa to elect their President according to their consitution. The background is here, thanks to manderson with a good backgrounder: https://sovereignista.com/globalsouthforum/topic/africa/#post-32531
But time is getting short and tempers are fraying. The word used is that they will set together or attempt to set together a Government of National Unity, with representation from basically many, instead of a coalition which the ANC cannot hook through this time. Their representation has fallen too low and others are too high. They need two others to create a coalition with, if they don’t align with the DA, and that is almost impossible. They are however clinging to their bossiness something fierce, while speaking gentle words.
The National Assembly will sit on this Friday when the various elections will start. https://www.dailymaverick.co.za/article/2024-06-10-zondo-announces-national-assembly-first-sitting-set-for-friday/
In the mean-time, the new party, MK, which is commonly called “the Zulus”, are off to consitutional court, to try to interdict the first sitting of parliament. They want the country by any means possible. Remember, they were not a contender before the election and their showing in the election was an absolute surprise.
The ANC is off disciplining some members that are very upset that the Democratic Alliance, the 2nd biggest party, is invited to the Government of National Unity. The party says it is not censoring members but is imposing democratic centralism. (No, I also cannot figure out what that could mean). Here are some of the differences between the ANC and the DA and they are stark. The DA is pro-Israel, pro-Ukraine and pro-West. So, you go and create a National Unity out of this, while the MK is running off to court to interdict it all.
Good Heavens – this is what happens when the US writes your constitution for you, and this is what happened in 1994, when the constitution was accepted and this constitution was the problem when Mr.Putin needed to visit BRICS, Johannesburg. My concern is BRICS. Of course one could expect there to be western meddling (it has always been there) to try and deprive BRICS and multipolarity of a strong South Africa.
This is not trivial.
I know little about SA politics but it seems the current version of ANC is showing its true colours, an alliance with a pro Israel party when the ANC government took Israel to the ICC? What??? I agree with you that this is big.
