Russia’s envoy to the BRICS says the bloc of emerging economies is after enhancing its influence on the global stage.
The group’s agenda features endeavor towards “enhancing [the level of its] influence on global decision-making [processes],” Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Sergei Ryabkov said in Moscow on Monday, addressing the bloc’s Women’s Entrepreneurship Forum.
The diplomat hailed that “[positive] involvement in the field of business and other areas of interaction and cooperation has turned BRICS into a powerful institution on the international stage.”
“It is very important that the interests of all members be boosted [simultaneously],” he noted.
A coalition initially made up of Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa, BRICS expanded earlier this year to include Egypt, Iran, Ethiopia, and the United Arab Emirates. As many as 44 other nations have also reportedly expressed interest in joining the bloc.

The Russian diplomat noted how the addition of the new members this year had “increased the group’s potential so it can pursue its goals on the global scale.” He likewise acknowledged that there was a growing interest among various countries to accede to the bloc.
Still addressing the forum that was also joined by Iran’s Ambassador to Moscow Kazem Jalali, Ryabkov said cooperation among the bloc’s members did not simply concern the economic area.
“These instances of cooperation also concern the member countries’ other aspects,” including culture and civilization, he said, citing Iran and Egypt’s rich cultural and civilizational background.
Notes from Amarynth : It is good to see that Iran has started releasing press on BRICS. Now we are waiting for Egypt, the Emirates and Ethiopia. Russia itself has been scarce with reporting and I’ve been really digging only to find nothing much. The meeting on finance and the economy did not rate a press release (one that said nothing) or a dialog informational. This should not continue this way. And with South Africa out for the count dealing with their election, the strength in BRICS at the moment to my observation lags. BRICS members are not BRICS. I know Sergei Lavrov preaches go slow but is he not forgetting a huge viewership that will make this thing blow or go? Comments would be welcome.
Just brainstorming – I think Russia has been overtaken by events, and perhaps consensual RICs arrangement to be discrete. The Empire is on a rampage. Madder by the day. The year began with a major mass bombing around the commemoration of Soleimani’s assassination inside Iran, and never let up. Every… Read more »
Yes, I think you’ve hit the truest point here, which is the unwillingness to say too much until total and absolute fait accompli – if even then. Thank you for that perspective, it does seem the crucial dynamic. The calm are dealing with the enraged, stepping quietly makes a lot… Read more »
I agree with you Amarynth. As the head of the blog, and since Russia is chairing the BRICS this year, please consider sending Mr. Lavrov a note about the make or break need to provide to everybody substantial information regularly about BRICS.
I will do so Ernesto. Will tell the story one day how we walked into a leadership office and said we were formal emissaries and we needed to speak to the agriculture minister. It is just the way you hold yourself lol. I have two ‘blog formal’ notes to get… Read more »
Personally, I would like to see BRICS not just provide an alternative to Western institutions but also come up with one offering that is unique to BRICS and go 100% with that. Make membership mean something for each country. maybe that is BRICS exchange mechanism, but I don’t think so.… Read more »
