Larry Johnson has a very sobering message: “I recently asked a friend in military intelligence if the Top Brass in the U.S. military had awakened finally to the reality that Ukraine is losing the war, which means the United States is losing as well. His answer shocked me. He answered succinctly, “NO!”
The U.S. generals reportedly are clinging to the hope that Ukraine will wear down the Russian Army and create a new “Vietnam” for Russia. Looks like these generals — none of them served in Vietnam — are ignorant of the history of the United States in that ill-conceived, unnecessary war. We sacrificed the lives of 58,000 plus brave American youth and perhaps a million Vietnamese in 12 years of fighting that ultimately left the North Vietnamese in control of the country. ”

Argentina will not join the BRICS group; Alberto Fernandez has renounced participation in the summit
Alberto Fernández, Argentina’s President, has opted not to attend the XV Summit of BRICS taking place this week in Johannesburg, South Africa.
Official sources confirmed on Monday that Argentina’s integration into the BRICS group is not on the horizon, writes EFE agency in its latest report.
Without potential membership, Argentina misses the chance to access immediate loans from the New Development Bank of BRICS.
I have a temperature gauge figuring out the wins of empire and the losses of empire. After this BRICS we will take a a look.

Dear friends,
Today, our website, strategic-culture.org has been denied access to the .org domain, run by the U.S.-based Public Interest Registry. This comes in the wake of numerous cyberattacks aimed at the website’s infrastructure.
There is no doubt that this act of cyber warfare is an attempt to silence another independent media critical of the American empire 🤐 Currently, all our materials are accessible on Telegram (https://t.me/strategic_culture) and we will resume the operation of our website soon.

On 22 August 2023, at the invitation of the commander of the Libyan National Army, Field Marshal Khalifa Haftar, a delegation from the Russian Ministry of Defence headed by the Deputy Minister of Defence of the Russian Federation, Colonel General Yunus-Bek Yevkurov, arrived in Libya.
▫️ This is the first official visit by a Russian military delegation to Libya, prepared following Russia-Libya negotiations within the framework of the 11th Moscow International Security Conference and the Army 2023 International Military-Technical Forum.
▫️ During the visit, it is planned to discuss prospects for co-operation in combating international terrorism and other issues of joint activity.
It would be good if Russia could adopt Libya as a special project, just as China adopted Afghanistan as a special project.

Nikolai Patrushev on Japan:At a meeting in Magadan, Secretary of the Security Council of the Russian Federation Patrushev spoke about Tokyo’s revanchist plans. According to him, the Anglo-Saxons in recent years have again drawn Japan into their geopolitical games. At the same time, Tokyo, which follows in the wake of US policy, has taken a course towards militarization.
The Anglo-Saxons and their allies, trying to undermine the situation in Russia, are trying to belittle the feat of the Soviet people in the victory over fascism. At the same time, they deliberately hush up the atrocities not only of the Nazis, but also of their close allies – the Japanese militarists.
“Imperial slogans are being heard again. Manuals about the Russian and Chinese threats are being taken from the archive shelves. Revanchist plans are being nurtured to return the “northern territories” that were ceded to our country at the end of the Second World War,” the secretary of the Russian Security Council emphasized.
Patrushev added that the “Japanese should learn better the lessons of the past” and not “build illusions that the Americans will value the lives of the Japanese more than, for example, the lives of Ukrainian soldiers.”
In the meantime, Japan said it will start releasing more than 1 million metric tonnes of treated radioactive water from the wrecked Fukushima nuclear power plant on August 24. The announcement comes a day after the government said it had won “a degree of understanding” from the fishing industry over the release of the water, even as a fishing group said it still feared the reputational damage would ruin livelihoods.

The SMO – It is as usual. Dead Ukrainian soldiers and mercenaries, and continual ‘improvement of the situation’ reported for the Russian forces. The grind continues and Russia does not give an inch. Desperation reigns in the Western sphere as they have no plan B.

In Niger, Ecowas turned up for negotiations, except it was not negotiations, it was dictat. The leaders of the military junta has a fair 3-year path forward lined up in order to transition to civilian rule. We may take the example of Libya, which is still in travail. But Ecowas uses clear imperial language and in stark contrast, they are not using BRICS language. AHH talked about this in the Hearty Salon: https://sovereignista.com/globalsouthforum/topic/the-hearty-salon-15-08-2023-open-thread/#post-17621
ECOWAS rejects Niger’s three-year transition plan
ECOWAS has dismissed as a negotiating tactic the announcement by Niger’s coup leader that civilian rule cannot be restored for three years. (Note, this was never said, only that a 3-year transition is being developed. Forked tongues maintain their double talk). The organisation’s political commissioner, Abdel-Fatau Musa, said the timetable was unacceptable. On Saturday, Gen Abdourahamane Tchiani said a national dialogue was needed to lay the foundations for a new political order in Niger.
There is a real possibility of another proxy war. Empire does not like it if their looting of others is summarily curtailed. The military junta says clearly that there is a terrible risk of Niger and surrounds becoming another Libya.
Walking a fine line? New US envoy will “bolster efforts to help resolve the political crisis… Her diplomatic focus will be to advocate for a diplomatic solution… We remain committed to working with African partners, including the ECOWAS … in the Sahel.”https://t.co/TUl1q5z4fI

The Panama Canal has serious problems with navigation – due to the high temperature there is not enough water, and the management authorities had to introduce restrictions on draft of transiting vessels and the number of transits.
As a result, more than 200 ships have accumulated in traffic jams on both sides of the canal, waiting for their turn to pass through the locks for three weeks.

For many years now the alternative route, the Nicaragua Canal has been stopped, frozen, and in one or another way made unable to continue by the usual suspects. It is an ideal China project and should have been built.
It is because of noticing these types of climate issues that I made this short post. https://sovereignista.com/2023/08/18/putins-meeting-with-government-members-climate/

According to the Russian MoD, the previous 24 hours were normal operations more or less with the requisite number of dead Ukrainians everywhere. What was different was a number of the Ukrainian drone attack attempts. I think I counted six or so on the regular Russian MoD English TG channel. They don’t hit anything and do not do much damage and get taken down as fast as they fly in. But, they will hit something somewhere sometime.
What was interesting though was this group of mainly mercenaries, about 150 of them, now all dead, that tried to gain a foothold on the left bank of the Dnepr River.
▫️ The Dnepr Group allowed the enemy’s advance forces, which were primarily made up of mercenaries, to land and then targeted the unloading boats with artillery fire. The artillerymen used air, shock, and radio-fused shells to assault the targets.
▫️ Scattered enemy groups were completely cleared by motorised rifle and reconnaissance units, which captured dozens of foreign weapons, ammunition, radios, and equipment as trophies.
Not many Ukrainian fighters are left, and now the Russians are working on the mercenaries by the looks of things and slowly taking more territory. The territory of the Kharkiv region, controlled by Russian forces, has grown by five settlements in a week – up to 33 settlements. This was announced by the head of the military-civilian administration of the Kharkiv region Vitaly Ganchev on the air of Soloviev. Live.
Ukraine held an exhibition of drones at a theater, Chernigov theater (north of Kiev) and Russia took out the whole exhibition. It was supposed to be a ‘secret’ exhibition.

These three, US, South Korea and Japan, gathered together at Camp David and decided it was not peaceful enough in the complete Asia Pacific Basin. And then they decided to tell a combined lie, that China is displaying aggressive and dangerous behavior and emitted ‘The Strongest Warning Yet’ to China”. And then Biden walked away and Japan and South Korean leaders forlornly joined their hands and posed for the cameras with Biden’s back turned to them, shufflin’ off.
US, South Korea and Japan condemn China, agree to deepen military ties
US President Joe Biden and the leaders of South Korea and Japan agreed at Camp David to deepen military and economic cooperation and made their strongest joint condemnation yet of “dangerous and aggressive behavior” by China in the South China Sea.
In a summit statement, the three countries committed to consult promptly with each other during crises and to coordinate responses to regional challenges, provocations, and threats affecting common interests.
They also agreed to hold military training exercises annually and to share real-time information on North Korean missile launches by the end of 2023. The countries promised to hold trilateral summits annually.
Wang Wenbin stated:
In a world of change and disorder on the security front, all parties should act on the vision of a community of shared security for mankind, practice true multilateralism, and jointly address various security challenges. No country should seek its own security at the expense of other countries’ security interests and regional peace and stability. The international community has its fair judgment on who is stoking conflicts and exacerbating tensions. The Asia-Pacific is an anchor for peace and development and a promising land for cooperation and growth, and should never be turned into a wrestling ground for geopolitical competition again. Attempts to cobble together various exclusionary groupings and bring bloc confrontation and military blocs into the Asia-Pacific are not going to get support and will only be met with vigilance and opposition from regional countries.
North Korea understands the meaning of this and stated that it is a “dangerous prelude to the creation of an “Asian version of NATO”. Of course, North Korea is now preparing for military actions in protest of US three-nation summit. (Expect a spate of missile launches).
China started a series of drills around Taiwan – not specifically as an answer to this summit, but as a “serious warning” to separatist forces in a widely expected response to a visit by Vice President William Lai of Taiwan to the United States. It said it was also holding joint exercises and training of naval and air forces, focusing on subjects such as ship-aircraft coordination and seizing control, to test the forces’ “actual combat capabilities”.
One provocative visit, one provocative summit meeting, and overnight the relatively peaceful basin is bristling with military maneuvers and equipment. Aggression and accusations are off the charts. China is calling a new cold war, and so is Russia. “The North Atlantic Alliance has finally returned to the schemes of the Cold War with Russia. This was stated by Viktor Goremykin, Deputy Minister of Defence of the Russian Federation – Head of the Main Military and Political Directorate of the Russian Armed Forces, during his address to the Second International Anti-Fascist Congress taking place in Minsk.”

And after his meeting with Biden, Kishida feels strong. Did he receive a Yes for this act from the Biden admin?
Kishida to visit Fukushima nuclear plant on Sunday before water release decision
Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida said he will visit the Fukushima nuclear plant on Sunday ahead of a final decision on when to begin releasing wastewater from the wrecked facility into the Pacific Ocean.
“The government is at the final stage of when it has to make a decision,” Kishida said on Friday in the US following a trilateral meeting with South Korean President Yoon Suk-yeol and President Joe Biden.
Japan plans to release into the ocean 500 Olympic-size swimming pools worth of water from the plant wrecked by a tsunami on March 11, 2011.

BRICS is next on the Agenda. Chinese President Xi Jinping will pay a state visit to South Africa next week, and will also attend the BRICS summit. Xi’s trip will be his second international one this year, after paying an official state visit to Russia in March. So Xi is combining two objectives, an official state visit as well as BRICS. This is interesting as he is in a sense making up for Putin not being at BRICS in person, and signaling the importance of Africa and BRICS. His statement as far as BRICS is concerned is that he will ‘jointly chart the bloc’s blueprint’.
Aug 19
ECOWAS in West Africa is still threatening that if the deposed President is not re-instated, they will start military action against Niger. It is hard to assess if they are full of talk, or serious, or simply repeating what their masters tell them to say. There is a clear uptick of violent incidents in the area, mostly by armed gangs.
If we apply ‘evil think’, something will break during the BRICS meetings, in order to reduce the importance of BRICS and force the other African leaders at BRICS to attend to a possible war instead of BRICS business. I hope I am wrong.
“ECOWAS has agreed a “D-day” for a possible military intervention to restore democracy in Niger if diplomatic efforts fail, a senior official said on Friday, without disclosing when that is.
The official made the comments at the end of a two-day meeting of West African army chiefs in Ghana’s capital Accra, where they have been hashing out the logistics and strategy for a possible use of force in Niger that ECOWAS has said would be a last resort.”
This is simple to decode. If you do not do what we want you to do (called diplomatic efforts), we will shoot you.
The African Union is not backing ECOWAS.
This one is not over yet.
