I wonder how much it’s actually the Trump train, as opposed to just revealing the reality – the people in the empire by and large are happy with the status quo and want it to continue. And Trump is the way to make that happen.

In a different vein, a while back I first wrapped my mind around postmodern and post-postmodern thought, and realized how empty American “Christianity” actually is. I realized the “modern” worldview, in vogue after the Renaissance and the Enlightenment in the west, is stuck in a place requiring a mental foundation of some sort. At the end of all the questions in America, the answer is “because God”. It’s not “turtles all the way down”, at some point the turtles holding up the world are standing on a foundation, and that foundation is “God”.

That foundation is not there. The author is actually dead, and can’t force you to read what he or she writes and take away from it exactly what they intended when they wrote it. That doesn’t mean the end of spirituality, but it does draw into question the black&white good vs. evil dynamic through which we see the world. When someone in America asks why we do some thing or other and call it good, the answer is “because the Bible says so”. Even if the thing being done is bad.

Taking that foundation away from people who have lived their entire lives inside of it is terrifying to them psychologically. The paradigm within which they have shaped their lives is gone. I find most people, when faced with this reality, choose to become a porcupine, and try to pretend their reality hasn’t been shattered. They try to escape back into the warm cocoon they have known their entire lives, pretend everything is normal, and develop psychic walls against any truth that challenges them moving forward.

I don’t see any way out of this for America except defeat. The hubris and narratives run too deep to face the truth without the truth being forced upon us.
