I think Kimi is wrong here. Probably too much distillation from western models. The analyses I’ve seen is that the majority of the “Ukrainian counterattack” was in Dnipropetrovsk, on the edge of Zaporizhia, where there were a number of claims of land regained, but in actuality Ukrainian troops moved into lightly held “grey zones” behind the frontline Russian troops moving west. In the below screenshot you can see much of the “recaptured” territory, north of Hulyaipole…
There’s a whole hodge-podge of colors on that map, because it is difficult for analysts to make sense of what is going on there. Is it truly land that is “held” by Ukraine after counterattacks? Is it truly land that was fully captured and held by Russians and then retaken by Ukraine? I think the answer on both counts is NO. I’ve seen many videos of Ukrainian troops and equipment meeting their end in this counterattack.
To me, the truth is more that Ukraine moved assault troops into lightly held areas, and after taking out many of the Ukrainians the Russians have simply not bothered with retaking full control of those territories. Right now the Russians are moving on Orikhov, which is west off the edge of the map I posted above. They seem to be focusing on municipalities, not holding empty territory for the sake of…
So I stipulate, unless other evidence shows up to the contrary, that the “recaptured” Ukrainian territory is really just a big grey zone, and the Russians are focused on larger cities elsewhere.
