Dear emersonreturn, I have not speculated. The tariffs as they actually come to be applied seem not to create inflation – because no new money is being created – and for the most part the supply/manufacture end is absorbing the cost. Why? Because the US market actually is worth being in, and the US consumer has enough choice to switch if a price goes up, for the most part.

In other words, from what I can gather, the tariffs are a good idea and they’re working for the US – Medvedev is correct, Trump is grifting, always, but always for the USA.

So I suspect that a lot of people calling the tariffs a negative thing are actually wrong, even the esteemed authors here. And also, I should add that the tariffs and all this noise that is perceived as foreign policy – I don’t see it that way, I see it as domestic policy. And he has very sound thinking behind all his domestic policy (many people worked on it).

It happens to involve other countries but only incidentally. We shouldn’t conflate the two – the tariffs and all the extortion, these are not foreign policy, not part of empire.

As to why…well, I guess there is more than one reason. I know that engineering contractors can’t bid a close estimate anymore, as their suppliers can’t guarantee price. The materials’ cost for even domestic material has also tracked this way…a new roof for a house has about doubled in the last few years…and by the way, the cost of a roof is added to the property tax, thus there’s another multiplier. One reason for this is that many people are leaving the “Golden State” for what they imagine will be greener pastures. Thanks for the citation and Professor Jiang’s lecture. In many respects I disagree with his views, primarily in degree. An omission that seems significant is the geomagnetic shift that bodes all sorts of troubles. I disagree also about Odessa…there will be no grand siege there because it’s not possible to support a NATO garrison under a modern Red Army campaign. His view of China was sobering. I’m not sure he’s right about it though…it takes only a short time to depopulate a region, and the Chinese are very smart people, and with a long history…then too, they can do well without the Empire of Westzone. I do not see how westzone, or US, can do a land war on Iran…there is no way to assemble such an army…thus I think it won’t happen. Landings? Maybe in small numbers. Suicide. Murder and sabotage? Of course. Naturally that game is open to any organization, thus a zero sum I think.

I do agree with his unstated principle, which seems to say that when many disparate mature persons have ideas that align, the general product approaches the truth. Before formal synthesis such as the modern computer allows, the method was to assemble disparate experts and offer tangible reward for the opinion that was shown by time to have been correct. This method will, for example, predict the location of a lost child in the forest, or a castaway on a life-raft…and it works pretty well.

Excellent, Mr. P, we are on the same page. I found his approach interesting, but I don’t see it happening either.

What he does, and what almost all analysts do in all areas, is approach situations from the perspective of the past. They overlook the transformation that is taking place in humanity.

It’s like predicting the future in 1900 without knowing and taking into account that 100 years later we would have computers and the internet, not to mention people with a vastly different mindset due to that technological development.

To make it even more complex, we can add the human experience that is moving away from external authority (religion and government).

All too often, analysts fail to break everything down to its bare essentials and tend to build on a foundation they want to hold on to because they believe in it. Many financial analysts do this.

It is good that we are exploring this topic and thinking and talking about it. Humans are capable of creating, and we need to become more conscious of doing so.
