🔻 Armchair Warlord: The Telegraph recently published an article about Russian “triple chokehold” tactics in Ukraine.It’s nonsensical propaganda. Let’s examine it.⬇️
Essentially the Telegraph’s claim – lifted from British think-tanks who in turn got it via “reports” from the Ukrainians (read: propaganda fed to gullible suckers) – is that Russians have begun attacking using a three-step process. Step 1 is allegedly to send in ground troops to fix Ukrainian troops in position and force them to entrench, Step 2 is to deploy artillery and drones to further pin them down, and then Step 3 is to finally kill them with glide bombs. So the argument goes, this has allowed the Russians to start making ground despite the best efforts of the Ukrainian Army.
It’s also complete nonsense and likely a literal inversion of what is happening on the battlefield. The key thing to focus on here is the first step, which the Telegraph describes as unceasing assaults with “huge numbers of people” that are “exhausting” for Ukrainian soldiers – and, according to them, conducted prior to any preparatory fires! This simply is not happening. There is literally no evidence for it and there never has been during the entire course of the war.
What this claim seeks to explain instead is how the Ukrainians can supposedly be inflicting enormous casualties on the Russians while simultaneously losing “some” ground. If the Russians are just throwing men at them to pave the way for more technical means of destruction – rather than the opposite, as has held true for every army in the history of war – it credentials their propaganda about Russian casualties.
What’s actually happening in Ukraine is that the omnipresent threat of Russian artillery targeted by surveillance drones forces the AFU to dig in all along the front, kill drones can force enemy infantry entirely underground during assaults and thus suppress positions even moreso than would be possible with conventional weapons, and the Russian infantry storms in and mops up only once positions have been heavily “processed” by those systems as well as direct fire from combat vehicles. This minimizes Russian casualties and maximizes Ukrainian ones. It also makes for a rather ponderous advance as they slowly pick apart those positions and likely seek to maximize Ukrainian troops killed and equipment destroyed even at the expense of territorial gains.
Meanwhile glide bombs actually don’t seem to be used much on front-line trenches any more and instead find their main use bringing down heavy fortified structures at the tactical level and for “operational-level” strikes agains Ukrainian rear areas. This of course makes logical sense, bombing is a very poor means by which to destroy field works. To provide an example, it took B-52 runs to start doing serious damage to the North Vietnamese trenches around Khe Sanh in 1968.
Remember – much of the conventional narrative of this war, which is in the process of being created by a credentialed media that is an arm of the Davos Regime propaganda apparatus in a vile collaboration with Ukrainian and pro-Ukrainian shills, liars, and grifters, is simply going to be wrong. And this isn’t some novel claim for me to be making, much of the history of the Eastern Front of WWII as told in the west is Nazi bullshit, to say nothing of historical deficiencies in many other wars. If you think narratives about even granular combat action can’t be spun out of thin air to support sophisticated propaganda talking points… you’re wrong.

Examples abound: the Russian revolution of 1917 (after a defeat against Germany), the German revolution of 1918 (after losing WW1), the French revolution (after France’s defeat in the Seven Years’ War), the collapse of the Soviet system (after losing the arms race, and losing in Afghanistan), etc.
In this instance, he says the U.S. suffered what’s “fundamentally an economic defeat”: as he puts it “the sanctions policy showed that the financial power of the West was far from overwhelming. The Americans had the revelation of the fragility of their military industry. People at the Pentagon know very well that one of the limits to their action is the limited capacity of the American military-industrial complex.”
Interestingly, he believes that the Americans are ahead of the Europeans in their understanding of this: “this American awareness of defeat contrasts with the non-awareness of Europeans”
This is because “Europeans did not organize the war” and they therefore “cannot have full awareness of defeat. To have full awareness of defeat, they would need access to Pentagon thinking. But Europeans do not have access to it.”
As a result “Europeans situate themselves mentally before the defeat while the current American administration situates itself mentally after the defeat.”
The fact that it is a revolution can mostly be seen in the breadth of change at play, what Todd calls “a phenomenon of extraordinary violence, a violence that’s directed on one hand against allies/vassals – the Europeans, the Ukrainians – but which also expresses itself on the other hand, internally, in American society, through a struggle against universities, against gender theory, against scientific culture, against the policy of including Blacks in the American middle classes, against free trade and against immigration.”
More than anything, Todd writes, “the collapse of a system is mental as much as economic. What is collapsing in the current West, and first in the United States, is not only economic dominance, but also the belief system that animated it or was superimposed on it. The beliefs that accompanied Western triumphalism are collapsing. But as in any revolutionary process, we do not yet know which new belief is the most important, which is the belief that will emerge victorious from the process of decomposition.”
He writes that the Trump revolution has some “very reasonable things”, stemming from Trump’s intuitions. For instance, “Trump’s protectionism, the idea that America must be protected to rebuild its industry, results from a very reasonable intuition.”
Other example, “the idea of immigration control is reasonable, even if the style adopted by the Trump administration in managing immigration is unbearably violent.”
That being said, Todd writes, “despite the presence of these reasonable elements, I am pessimistic and I think the Trump experience will fail.”
This is because overall, he sees the primary belief driving the Trump revolution as nihilism – a “deification of emptiness” and a “will to destroy” that manifests in attacks on science, universities, and the very structures needed for the policies Trump claims to champion.
One example Todd gives of a “destructive impulse” is that of Trump seeking “to establish customs duties between Canada and the United States”, even though “the Great Lakes region constitutes a single industrial system.”
Another example of what Todd calls a “high-intensity nihilist project” is “the Trumpian fantasy of transforming Gaza, emptied of its population, into a tourist resort.”
But first and foremost, the “fundamental contradiction of American policy”, and the best example of Trump’s nihilism, is his approach to protectionism.
As Todd explains, “the theory of protectionism tells us that protection can only work if a country possesses the qualified population that would allow it to profit from tariff protections. A protectionist policy will only be effective if you have engineers, scientists, qualified technicians. Which Americans do not have in sufficient numbers. Now I see the United States beginning to hunt down their Chinese students, and so many others, those very ones who allow them to compensate for their deficit in engineers and scientists. This is absurd. The theory of protectionism also tells us that protection can only launch or relaunch industry if the State intervenes to participate in the construction of new industries. Now we see the Trump administration attacking the State, this State that should nourish scientific research and technological progress.”
Todd concludes that one ought to be “very pessimistic for the United States.” To state this conclusion, he goes back to fundamental concepts of anthropology (Todd is originally an anthropologist and demographer, at France’s National Institute of Demographic Studies).
As he writes, at its root “the model of the English and American family is nuclear, individualist, without even precise rules of inheritance. Freedom of will reigns. The Anglo-American nuclear family is very little structuring for the nation.”
What was structuring and stood “beside or above this individualist family structure” was “the discipline of Protestant religion, with its potential for social cohesion. Religion, as a structuring factor, was capital for the Anglo-American world.”
However, in his view, “it has disappeared”. He says that he is aware of “these excited evangelists who surround Trump. But all that, for me, is not true religion. It is in any case not true protestantism. The God of American evangelists is a nice guy who distributes financial gifts; he is no longer the severe Calvinist God who demands a high level of morality, who encourages a strong work ethic and favors social discipline.”
He writes that this “zero state of religion, combined with very little structuring family values does not seem to me an anthropological and historical combination that could lead to stability. It is toward ever greater atomization that the Anglo-American world is heading. This atomization can only lead to an accentuation, without visible limit, of American decadence.”
He concludes with these words: “My personal fear is that we are not at all at the end, but only at the beginning of a collapse of the United States that will reveal to us things that we cannot even imagine.”

How so? It was settled by none other than Apple, specifically their Machine Learning Research department, in a seminal research paper entitled “The Illusion of Thinking: Understanding the Strengths and Limitations of Reasoning Models via the Lens of Problem Complexity“ that you can find here (ml-site.cdn-apple.com/papers…).
What does the paper say? Exactly what I was arguing: AI models, even the most cutting-edge Large Reasoning Models (LRMs), are no more than a very gifted parrots with basically no actual reasoning capability.
They’re not “intelligent” in the slightest, at least not if you understand intelligence as involving genuine problem-solving instead of simply parroting what you’ve been told before without comprehending it.
That’s exactly what the Apple paper was trying to understand: can “reasoning“ models actually reason? Can they solve problems that they haven’t been trained on but would normally be easily solvable with their “knowledge”? The answer, it turns out, is an unequivocal “no“.
A particularly damning example from the paper was this river crossing puzzle: imagine 3 people and their 3 agents need to cross a river using a small boat that can only carry 2 people at a time. The catch? A person can never be left alone with someone else’s agent, and the boat can’t cross empty – someone always has to row it back.
This is the kind of logic puzzle you might find in a children brain teaser book – figure out the right sequence of trips to get everyone across the river. The solution only requires 11 steps.
Turns out this simple brain teaser was impossible for Claude 3.7 Sonnet, one of the most advanced “reasoning” AIs, to solve. It couldn’t even get past the 4th move before making illegal moves and breaking the rules.
Yet the exact same AI could flawlessly solve the Tower of Hanoi puzzle with 5 disks – a much more complex challenge requiring 31 perfect moves in sequence.
Why the massive difference? The Apple researchers figured it out: Tower of Hanoi is a classic computer science puzzle that appears all over the internet, so the AI had memorized thousands of examples during training. But a river crossing puzzle with 3 people? Apparently too rare online for the AI to have memorized the patterns.
This is all evidence that these models aren’t reasoning at all. A truly reasoning system would recognize that both puzzles involve the same type of logical thinking (following rules and constraints), just with different scenarios. But since the AI never learned the river crossing pattern by heart, it was completely lost.
This wasn’t a question of compute either: the researchers gave the AI models unlimited token budgets to work with. But the really bizarre part is that for puzzles or questions they couldn’t solve – like the river crossing puzzle – the models actually started thinking less, not more; they used fewer tokens and gave up faster.
A human facing a tougher puzzle would typically spend more time thinking it through, but these ‘reasoning’ models did the opposite: they basically “understood” they had nothing to parrot so they just gave up – the opposite of what you’d expect from genuine reasoning.
Conclusion: they’re indeed just gifted parrots, or incredibly sophisticated copy-paste machines, if you will.
This has profound implications for the AI future we’re all sold. Some good, some more worrying.
The first one being: no, AGI isn’t around the corner. This is all hype. In truth we’re still light-years away.
The good news about that is that we don’t need to be worried about having “AI overlords” anytime soon. The bad news is that we might potentially have trillions in misallocated capital.

I went upstairs, spotted the bathroom, but as I was entering it, out of the corner of my eye I saw into the master bedroom, and over the headboard of the bed was a large oil painting of Mrs. Traynor, fully nude, laying on a couch.
I confess I leaned inside the bedroom door to get a better look at it before I prudently entered the bathroom and shut the door behind me.
Meanwhile, I heard Mrs. Traynor enter the house and scurry quietly up the stairs. When I exited the bathroom shortly thereafter, the master bedroom door had been shut. 🤣

To my frustration, in the last couple years, I have struggled to find teenage boys willing to help me with my yard work, despite the fact that I pay them $20/hour + one 90% silver US dime (worth ~$2.50) if they do a good job, and never ask of them more than 2 – 3 hours on any given day.😞

Every “secret” weapon, every tactical advantage, every backup plan, your every thoughts – they knew it all in real time.
How would you feel in that moment? You’d surely feel betrayed, but more than that – completely outmaneuvered before the game even began, utterly exposed and defenseless. Right?
Well, that’s exactly what just happened in Taiwan. This isn’t a hypothetical scenario – it’s literally yesterday’s news from Taipei (link)
What happened?
Four former Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) members were indicted on June 10, 2025 for espionage on behalf of the PRC: Huang Chu-jung (黄取荣), Chiu Shih-yuan (邱世元), Ho Jen-chi (何仁杰), and Wu Shang-yu (吴尚雨).
As a reminder the DPP is the “anti-China“ party in Taiwan, the pro-independence party that’s been in power continuously since 2016.
These people weren’t just ordinary party members:
– Wu Shang-yu was one of president Lai Ching-te’s top aides
– Ho Jen-chieh was top aide to Joseph Wu when Wu served as foreign minister (Wu is now National Security Council Secretary-General)
– Chiu Shih-yuan is the former deputy head of the DPP’s Taiwan Institute of Democracy, the DPP’s own internal think tankIn other words, it’s safe to assume that every major Taiwanese defense plan, every diplomatic initiative, every presidential movement, and every strategic assessment has been an open book to Beijing for the better part of a decade.
Sure, it’s possible that this is itself a psyop, that these people are in fact all innocent and that the DPP is waging a paranoid witch hunt.
But even if that were the case, the outcome is virtually the same: China has effectively already won the psychological warfare.
How can Taiwan’s military and political leadership ever again have confidence in their own security apparatus? The mere suspicion of such comprehensive penetration at the highest levels of government is enough to paralyze decision-making and destroy the trust essential for effective defense.
It also results in destroying the trust of Taiwan’s partners: seeing this as an American, you can only conclude that you must operate under the assumption that any exchange of classified materials, operational details, or strategic assessments with the government in Taiwan will be on Xi Jinping’s desk before the meeting ends. It effectively neutralizes any meaningful defense cooperation.
In other words, the conclusion is devastating for Taiwan: China might have just achieved the ultimate expression of its own strategic doctrine – they have conquered Taiwan’s strategy so completely that conquering by fighting becomes unnecessary.
And this isn’t the only immensely consequential recent news for Taiwan.
In fact, yesterday – decidedly quite the eventful day – there was an even more important revelation: China has effectively “broken” the so-called “First Island Chain“.

Netanyahu won the vote, that took place after all the faffing – this was one of the objectives of all the noise in the past days. From Israeli media: The opposition’s motion to dissolve the Knesset was defeated in a vote of 61 to 53 overnight. This was the result of a last-minute compromise on the conscription law that will see young ultra-Orthodox Jewish men more gradually introduced into military service.

Iran is not keeping quiet at all and vowing to continue with its nuclear program and even build a new enrichment plant.
Iran has started what they term ‘out of schedule’ military drills. (The threats can work both ways).
