– The main hurdle is that the West’s relentless push for an impossible Ukrainian victory against a much stronger opponent has strengthened Russia’s hand.

– By rejecting earlier opportunities for negotiation — when Ukraine was in a stronger position — Western leaders have allowed Russia to consolidate its military gains, leaving little incentive for Putin to compromise on his core demands: legal recognition by Ukraine and the West of Russia’s annexed territories as part of the Russian Federation; and Ukraine’s renunciation of NATO membership aspirations and adoption of neutral, non-aligned status.

– In this sense, the belief that the West can achieve at the negotiating table what it failed to secure on the battlefield is a dangerous illusion. As John Mearsheimer put it: “To win at the negotiating table, you have to win on the battlefield, and it’s the Russians who are winning on the battlefield”.

– Ukraine — and the West — thus face a difficult decision: either accept Putin’s terms, or endure the continuation of the war, which will further weaken Ukraine’s position (while causing countless more lives to be lost for nothing).

– Certain factions will undoubtedly decry such terms as an unacceptable capitulation. However, the reality is that accepting a deal now is Ukraine’s best option. All evidence suggests that the longer the war continues, the worse Ukraine’s position will become.

– However, it will be very hard for Trump to sell an agreement on Russia’s terms — to Ukraine as well as inside the US, where he is likely to face intense pushback from the pro-war establishment.

– Trump’s vision of a “quick fix” in the form of a ceasefire or truce, pending a more comprehensive agreement, is also unlikely to succeed. Putin believes a prolonged ceasefire would merely allow Ukraine to rearm and prepare for a renewed offensive.

– But perhaps most crucially, reaching a comprehensive settlement means understanding that this war is about more than just territory or NATO membership; it’s about the future of the world order. For peace to truly take root — not just between Ukraine and Russia, but between Russia and the West — the latter must abandon its (failed) attempts to isolate and weaken Russia, and take genuine steps to address Russia’s security concerns. This is why Putin has emphasised that a comprehensive peace deal must include the removal of all sanctions against Russia.

– Achieving such a geopolitical grand bargain, though, would require an all-out paradigm shift, in which the West relinquishes its pursuit of dominance and recognises the multipolar nature of global power dynamics. Yet, no Western leader — including Trump — seems prepared to make this leap.

– Europe, too, represents a major obstacle. Even though its long-term economic and security interests clearly lie in ending the war and renormalising relations with Russia, European leaders have shown little inclination toward diplomacy, with some actively opposing Trump’s overtures. Indeed, the EU’s stance today is much more hawkish than the US’s; in psychoanalytical terms, it’s as if Europe is reacting to its transatlantic identity crisis brought on by Trump by projecting the United States’ role onto itself, replicating the aggressive stance of its former protector.

– Meanwhile, NATO’s general thrust seems unaffected by Trump’s impending return, suggesting that it answers more to the US military-security apparatus than it does to the White House.

In short, the path forward remains fraught with obstacles. Putin’s conditions for peace are uncompromising, Western leaders remain entrenched in their positions, and Europe’s hawkish stance only complicates matters further.

• lots of air-refueling tankers
• every single available air defense system in the US/NATO arsenal, along with the entire current stock of interceptors
• 2500 Tomahawk cruise missiles, with the optimistic hope of achieving a 20% successful strike ratio (500)
• at least half a million combat troops
• at least half a million combat drones of various types, with another half-million in ready reserve
• and most importantly, secure and efficient logistics, including 24/7 maintenance facilities

This is where the mammoth size of the American security state is not an advantage, but a big problem: the US has so many agencies, agents, soldiers, and mercenaries there is no way to keep track of all of them. Think about a million people with a ‘top secret’ clearance across 100 departments and agencies, some completely hidden from other bodies inside the system, and all operating under a license to do whatever, and no political or public oversight.

The size of this system, and its million tentacles, make it very unstable and almost impossible to centrally manage: think about the paranoia members of all these organizations must experience, as they suspect they are being fooled or set up by other people with an event more top secret classification, and a design that can’t be pure.

Practically, when a big incident happens, it is not only the public that’s confused, but much of the system, too: can the FBI be sure it is not being deliberately misled by another agency? They can’t. And it’s impossible to function effectively in such an atmosphere.

Trump says that the US need Greenland “for national security purposes” and “for the free world”, and claims that “people really don’t even know if Denmark has any legal right to it” (which is 100% false).

Would he ever dare say this with regards to Chinese or Russian territory? Not in a million years. But he sees that not only is Europe weak but also in the absolutely disastrous strategic situation where it is “defended” by him! Which means that Europe is effectively trapped in a mob-style protection racket and is about to relearn the old geopolitical adage (attributed to Thucydides): “the strong do what they can and the weak suffer what they must”.

So many ironies here of course, starting with Trump’s claim about protecting the “free world” through territorial annexation.

Second irony is that Europe’s hysterical fixation on Russian imperialism – more phantom than reality given Russia’s demonstrated capabilities – has led it to sleepwalk into the clutches of an actual empire that now casually discusses carving it up.

Last but not least, probably the bigger irony is that no-one in the whole world is going to care because of Europe’s double-standards and hypocrisy in its own dealings with the rest of the world, and Gaza in particular. Since the very beginning of Gaza (and again yesterday: |link| ) I wrote that the bigger meaning of Europe’s response would be the death of any pretense to an global order based on international law.

And that’s exactly where we are. By choosing to openly abandon even the appearance of principles Europe has essentially announced it was ok with “might makes right”. A monumentally stupid thing to do when you aren’t mighty yourself…

Europe’s leaders (if you can call them so), in their eagerness to be “good allies” by supporting the violation of international law in Gaza, have effectively signed their own continent’s permission slip for future dismemberment. They’ve forgotten that principles aren’t just moral luxuries – they’re practical shields, and once broken for others, they no longer protect you either.

Their forgetting this is especially egregious given Europe’s own history. Because we’ve we’ve seen this many times before and perhaps the most salient example is the response – or absence thereof – to Mussolini’s Italy invading Ethiopia in 1935, which resulted in hundreds of thousands of Ethiopian deaths.

Despite Ethiopia being a member of the League of Nations, the UN-ancestor meant to prevent exactly such aggression, major powers chose to protect their fellow European power rather than uphold international law. With the consequences we all know about: the death of the League of Nations as a credible institution and the clear message to other European powers that hunting season on weaker nations and peoples was officially open. Within a few months afterwards, Hitler started remilitarizing the Rhineland.

The century of humiliation that Europe is walking into has a uniquely self-inflicted quality to it, stemming from its own moral corruption and strategic myopia. Unlike China, which at least could claim to have been blindsided by European imperialism, Europe is actively participating in dismantling the very legal protections that could shield it from stronger powers. When CSG-2 (USS Brave Sir Robin) was last in the Red Sea, its crew (by its own admission) was “traumatized” by the constant barrage of missiles from the Yemeni. They encountered the most intense firepower the US Navy had seen since WW2. And every time they ventured too close, they found themselves under attack. They soon exhausted their magazines and had to run away. These are the simple undeniable facts of the matter.

You’re correct in noting that CSG-8 (USS Trembling Puppy) is now operating in a similar fashion. It got too close a few weeks ago, got attacked good and hard, shot down one of their own F/A-18Fs in the midst of the melee, and almost shot down a second.

Then both CVN-75 and CG-64 skedaddled at flank speed back to the far northern reaches of the Red Sea.

After gathering their wits for a few weeks, they ventured south again, launched a few strike sorties, and then were forced to fend off another series of pot shots from the Yemeni, after which CSG-8 sped back north to where they are now.

Meanwhile the Yemeni continue to impose a selective blockade of the Red Sea and the Suez Canal.

🔻Russians With Attitude: On American expansionism.

The incoming administration seems to have a more realistic image of the state of American hegemonial decline and wants to take proactive steps to try to counteract and reverse it, breathing new life into the American Global Empire.

In this context, it makes perfect sense for the US to increase pressure on its vassals. I am not using the term in a pejorative sense. The US does not have “allies” in the traditional meaning of the word. It has vassals with different levels of feudal obligations and elite integration, and different tasks. Extracting more value from vassals — whether through tariffs, increased NATO budgets, meddling in local politics or potential territorial concessions — is an absolutely logical step in cementing and renewing America’s position as overlord of its sphere.

There are three ways America’s European vassals can react to this: look for protection outside of the sphere, try to make themselves more useful/necessary & advance integration, or take it on the face. Were we in, I don’t know, the 19th century, Denmark would just ask Russia for military support in Greenland in exchange for mild economic concessions and never worry again. As it is, the Royal Danish Army does not have any artillery anymore because they gave it all away for the purpose of firing cluster ammunition at Russian children in Donetsk. They did not receive anything in return for that and it did not help any Danish purpose. They cannot defend themselves if push comes to shove and they can’t ask anybody to help because most of their fellow vassals have done the same. The most likely option is that they’ll just take it on the face. Not just for pragmatic reasons, but also because they genuinely enjoy being dommed geopolitically.

America has no obligation to treat its vassals better. I’ve seen Danish people complain on here about supporting the US after 9/11, participating in the American wars in the Middle East, etc. That’s ridiculous. You know how a colony is rewarded for sending troops to its overlord’s wars? It doesn’t get beaten. That’s the reward for a lackey. Any person who takes any of the NATO democracy liberalism pilpul seriously is just not a serious person, it was never real, it was always just voluntary submission to be absolved from existing in History.

The world that existed in 1991-2022 does not exist anymore. It’s not coming back. You can just invade your neighbor. You can just fire missiles at international shipping lanes. You can just threaten to annex members of your military alliance. “You can just do things”, as the techbros like to say. The mirage of a post-historical order that only has to be policed from time to time but is never seriously challenged has disappeared. What did you think canceling the End of History meant? Vibes?
