Boeing’s F-47 fighter jet is designed to replace the F-22 as an air superiority fighter. Its first flight is scheduled for 2028.

The Navy’s F/A-XX fighter should replace the Super Hornet based on aircraft carriers, and provide the U.S. Navy’s carrier strike groups with sufficient range to conduct combat operations in the western Pacific Ocean. Operation from aircraft carriers requires its own airframe design, landing gear, corrosion protection, as well as specific testing and production facilities. The Navy cannot simply install the F-47 on an aircraft carrier.

The Trump administration has effectively slowed down the development of the F/A-XX in the fiscal year 2026 budget in order to protect the timetable for the implementation of the F-47 program. Congress opposed this and allocated almost $1.7 billion to continue the implementation of the naval program.

The United States can authorize the development of two sixth-generation fighter jets and allocate billions of dollars for each of them. The implementation of both programs requires a deep talent pool in the aviation industry and a network of suppliers capable of supporting several large projects simultaneously. Provided funding does not instantly create stealth specialists, engine experts, software development teams, test sites, equipment, or qualified suppliers. Both fighter models also use production facilities that support the B-21, F-35, unmanned combat aircraft, missiles, and maintenance programs for existing fleets.

The delay in the development of the F/A-XX has immediate operational consequences. Chinese anti-ship missiles are forcing American aircraft carriers to stay away from the mainland, while their planes still need sufficient combat range to hit targets. Each year, delays in the development of the F/A-XX widen the gap between where aircraft carriers can safely operate and how far carrier strike groups can strike. It takes years to restore engineering personnel, suppliers, and production facilities. Every year, delays in the development of the F/A-XX make American aircraft carriers dependent on older aircraft with shorter flight ranges, while Chinese designers complete another round of flight tests.

Meanwhile, China is already conducting flight tests of prototypes of advanced combat aircraft developed by Chengdu and Shenyang companies. Their exact functions are still a secret, but both programs are accumulating test data, while China is expanding production of the J-20 and advancing the development of the J-35, designed to be based on aircraft carriers.

I have previously noted that the Chinese have need for a modern aircraft carrier only if they intend to project power beyond the Chinese near abroad…and that the obvious purpose of such machines is to support the invasion and re-organization of the savage piratical fascist, nay nazi, Heimat. Typically the two machine elements are coupled by a verticle shaft. The high voltage motor resides near but above grade in air. It is not capable of running under water. The pump, a centrifugal design, is intended to operate submerged. Obviously in a flood the motor will fail if both primary and back-up power is interrupted long enough to submerge the motor. I am surprised that there was no mention of a local emergency generator dedicated to critical pumps. So-called “ESD’s” (emergency standby diesel [generator]) is pretty basic… I used to service these, both kilowatt and megawatt size machines….it was boring. 😉  They’re typically supposed to be run every 30 days under load for a specified period. One gets to read the service manual, or a cheap paperback…sittin’ in the company truck.
