  Yes Periol, as a deal it sucks and Venezuela could have developed their own industry if they were not under sanctions. Now, they are held in a state of abject colonialism, with the US writing every word that Rodriques may say.
  
  Why should the US even try to worry about Venezuela if not one sanction has been listed, gold is stolen and every penny that they earn goes into US treasury accounts.
  
  They may not sell a drop of oil to anyone, without working through the US. They may not donate oil to Cuba. It is therefore not their oil.
  
  I had to read this a few times before it stuck in my head.
  
  An average of $8.4 billion in yearly revenue for 1.5 million bpd produced also amounts to a much reduced share for the Caribbean nation. In 2025, with lower market prices and Venezuela forced to sell at a discount to circumvent US sanctions, the country collected a reported $18.4 billion from an average of 941,000 bpd produced.
  
  So, these are very early numbers .. $18.4 billion in the bag under conditions of sanctions, vs a promised $8.4 billion in a US treasury account for masses of more crude.
  
  Let me make a wild future prediction .. Venezuela will wait for Trump to leave his throne or for circumstances to change. They have in the past nationalized their industries and will do it again.

    I question if Venezuela ever really intended to develop that oil. More of a honey trap than an actual plan. Get someone else to spend the money on recovering oil that may or may not be recoverable. But that’s just me.

      Well, that should make no difference whether they wanted to or not. It is their oil. Whatever they wanted to do with it within the Bolivarian revolution is their business .. no? And yes, they wanted to develop. But that is like saying Cuba and Brother Fidel never wanted to hold the Cuban revolution. Or, Iran does not really want to to hold onto the Strait of Hormuz. Or Nicaragua never wanted to really really go with their Sadinista revoltuion. Or Russia really really actually wanted to get their international bank trading accoumts stolen.
      
      These were revolutionary movements against the US, who considered all of that their own back-yard.
      
      But Venezuela in the Bolivarian Revoltution wanted and actually did for years, ship affordable oil to Cuba, to some Island Nations and others. They really wanted to use their oil for good, and for years, they did. They shared oil with the Cuban physician’s program and supplied their region with affordable oil, sanctions or no sanctions.

        I suspect we are approaching this from different perspectives. It is bad for Venezuela that they are currently under occupation by the US. We agree, it sucks, and they are now no longer able to use their oil for the common good.
        
        As a result of this, there are a large number of people calling the current leadership of Venezuela traitors for giving into US demands. Delcy Rodriguez in particular is being called a traitor to the Venezuelan people. I have been trying to take a more nuanced perspective on her current leadership role, understanding that she has no choice but to give into US demands. At the moment. It seems to me she and the rest of the Venezuelan leaders are hoping to wait out the collapse of US power without completely giving up the farm.
        
        So what I see with this oil deal is that US-Venezuela agreed to let the US develop oil fields that have speculative, not proven reserves. They aren’t proven because Venezuela doesn’t have the money/technology to investigate and prove the actual amount, and the speculative numbers floated for these reserves have been inflated in the past, almost as a clarion call for someone to help develop the reserves.
        
        There was hope in the past China might invest in the development of these reserves, but they never really committed to this in any serious way. So now Rodriguez has spun a deal with the US that includes the following things:
        
        USA spends all the money on development – this would also provide jobs to Venezuelans and help the economy.
        
        Venezuela gets about from 1/4 to 1/3 of the profit if the oil fields are developed and the oil is sold
        
        The bad: 2/3 of the profit goes to the USA instead of Venezuela. Probably more than would have been the case if China helped develop these oil fields. The $19 per barrel of sold oil is held in the USA just like Iraqi oil revenues.
        
        The good: all of this would take time. Lots of time and money. There are many ways to look at this, but if Venezuela gets the US to pay now to develop the oil, who is to say the US will be in a position to reap the benefits from this in 5-10 years when the investment starts to actually come good? If US power projection collapses, Venezuela simply takes back the now developed oil fields, stops sending the oil to the US, and keeps all the money, no?
        
        So yes, in an ideal world, Venezuela is not controlled by the USA, and even barring that, is completely unsanctioned and free to do what they can to develop their oil reserves for the good of Venezuela. We are not in that ideal world, however, and it seems to me Rodriguez has taken the shit sandwich the US offered and is still working to turn it into a positive for the nation – no development costs burdening the people of Venezuela, all paid by the US. Extra money to Venezuela instead of simply having all their oil stolen with no return. The hope that facts on the ground change so that when the fields actually start producing, perhaps Venezuela gets to just keep their oil and their money and leave the US holding the bill for development.
        
        That’s my semi-positive hopeful take on this situation. I don’t think it’s a straight-up shit sandwich yet.

        Yup. Rodriques is doing what is possible. I see the little things that are not really in the media. When Delcy announced this deal, the document was in English. She has never done an English release ever. All her work is in Spanish and then gets translated.
        
        Yes, all of those that are now abandoning Venezuela sounding Oh so Holy,must just pick up their kitbags and go. ‘Yesterday’ they were all in favor, but forget things like the announcement of this ‘hemisphere’ is the US hemisphere. Little things, just now suddenly and for the first time, after this announcment, Maduro sends pictures from the jail … Just around this announcement Maduro’s son says Venezuela is doing the right thing.
        
        Now we are waiting to see what will brew out in Brazil. These people will take their hemisphere back as they did in the ’70s. I see a lot of the writing now calling ‘Nuestro/a America’, i.e., our America. That huge stinky scandal on highly sophisticated right wing meddling is making a massive impact. The leftists (and left and right has different meanings in the LAC) people suddenly understand why they are losing elections.
