Let me say the uncomfortable thing directly.
The critique that Russia and China “stand for nothing” comes, in many cases, from a political tradition that loves resistance as an aesthetic and is less comfortable with resistance as a project.
Resistance as aesthetic is:
The speech.
The gesture.
The flag.
The recognition.
The statement of solidarity.
The vote at the United Nations.
Resistance as project is:
Building the institutions.
Maintaining the alliances.
Absorbing the economic costs.
Making the decisions that preserve enough power to actually change conditions on the ground.
Iran is heroic.
Iran’s resistance is genuine and its costs have been enormous and the Iranian people deserve every acknowledgment of what they have endured.
Iran is also, because of those costs, economically devastated, regionally isolated, increasingly reliant on its relationships with China and Russia, and unable on its own to generate the sustained economic and institutional power required to shift the global balance.
Iran chose dignity. That choice is real and it deserves respect.
Russia and China are choosing to build the world that comes after American hegemony.
These are different projects.
One is about bearing witness to the crimes of power.
The other is about replacing the architecture of power with something that doesn’t require the next Iran to choose between dignity and survival.
Both matter.
But the second one is harder, less photogenic, and takes longer.
Don’t mistake the timeframe for cowardice.
Let’s stay with Iran for a moment.
Who kept Iran alive?
When the sanctions hit. When the oil revenues collapsed. When the currency crashed. When the spare parts for civilian aircraft stopped coming and Iranian planes started falling out of the sky. When the medical supply chains were disrupted and ordinary Iranians couldn’t get cancer medication.
Who kept Iran economically viable?
China.
China bought Iranian oil when no one else would.
China built trade relationships that bypassed dollar-denominated systems.
China provided the economic oxygen that made Iranian resistance to sanctions survivable.
China deployed the satellite network that kept Iranian missiles on target when US-Israeli jamming tried to blind them mid-flight.
Not dramatically. Not with speeches about solidarity and the dark hour of humanity.
- With purchase orders.
- With trade routes.
- With yuan.
- With BeiDou.
People praise Iran’s moral stance and critique China’s materialism in the same breath, without asking who paid for Iran’s moral stance to be possible.
The answer is China.
The principled resistance people celebrate was subsidized by the materialist they condemn.
The least anyone can do is acknowledge the relationship.
“Russia is standing for nothing.”
Russia, which is currently fighting the largest conventional land war in Europe since 1945, against a military supplied by more than fifty countries, funded by hundreds of billions in Western money, armed with the most sophisticated weapons NATO could transfer without triggering a formal Article 5 declaration.
Russia, which has absorbed more than twenty-three thousand targeted sanctions, from energy to aircraft parts to individual bank accounts, SWIFT exclusion, the most comprehensive economic warfare ever waged against a major power in history, and has not capitulated, has not sued for the “peace” that Washington keeps waiting for.
Russia, which had three hundred billion dollars in foreign reserves frozen by Western governments in an act of financial piracy so naked that even some Western economists called it a dangerous precedent.
And it is still there. Still fighting. Still refusing the terms.
Calling a country standing firm against the full military and economic force of the Western alliance, absorbing costs that would have collapsed most states, “cowardly” and “standing for nothing”…
That is a sentence that requires you to ignore the war that is actively happening.
Spain recognized Palestine from inside NATO, with American bases on its soil, with full access to Western financial markets, at essentially zero cost to its material position.
Those are not equivalent forms of courage.
Here is what resistance and solidarity actually look like at civilizational scale.
It does not look like a speech.
It does not look like a vote in a body that the opposing side controls.
It does not look like moral positioning that costs nothing and changes nothing.
At civilizational scale, resistance looks like:
A country absorbing every economic weapon the opposing side has and not collapsing.
A country building parallel institutions so that the opposing side’s leverage over the global system diminishes, year by year, in ways that cannot be reversed by any single political decision.
A country demonstrating, through its continued existence and growth under maximum pressure, that the Western-dominated order is not the only possible world.
Russia has done the first.
China is doing the second and third.
Neither of them is doing it in a way that satisfies the emotional need for visible moral heroism.
Civilizational patience looks like cowardice to people who are measuring in news cycles.
History measures differently.
Vietnam didn’t look like it was winning for twenty years.
And then the helicopter left the roof.
Measure again in ten years.
Measure what the dollar’s share of global reserves looks like.
Measure how many countries are still willing to implement American sanctions automatically.
Measure what the map of Chinese infrastructure investment looks like across the Global South.
Then tell me who stood for nothing.
