Kid, patience. They’ve already committed suicide. We can only approximate through literary allegory some understanding of this unfolding tragedy. One of my favorite works is Tolkien’s The Silmarillion. I recall the scene of the human demon-Lord Ar-Pharazôn, last ruler of Númenor, who was not only openly hostile to the Faithful, but proudly took his hosts and armadas against the Undying Lands itself, warring against the Valar, breaking all Taboos. He sought godhood and immortality, against all Law and norm.
The amazed Manwë, King of the Valar, put down his scepter and submitted to the will of Eru Ilúvatar (the One God). This madness was beyond his comprehension, and he was so sad. Mankind had not been created for this. A great split in reality and fall of mankind was in the offing.
“Nine years after the preparations for war began, the Great Armament was completed. Ar-Pharazôn journeyed to the west of Númenor where the fleet was anchored, and boarded his mighty ship Alcarondas. He sat upon his throne in full armour and signalled for the raising of the anchors. The fleet left Númenor just before sundown, and passed into the forbidden seas of the West.
Because no one from the Great Armament ever returned to mortal lands, Ar-Pharazôn’s fate remains uncertain. It is said in the Akallabêth that the fleet passed Tol Eressëa and anchored near the coast of Valinor. Upon seeing the splendour of Taniquetil, Ar-Pharazôn became afraid and nearly gave the order to retreat. In the end, however, his pride caused him to go ashore, and a great part of his army followed him. Ar-Pharazôn led his troops to the Elven city of Tirion, and they set up an encampment around it. Then the King proclaimed that the land of the Valar was his, if none would challenge him for it.
At this time, the Valar called upon Eru for aid, and relinquished their authority over Arda. Eru broke the world and made it round, so that Men could never again sail to Valinor. In this catastrophe, Ar-Pharazôn’s fleet was pulled into the chasm that opened between the Blessed Realm and mortal lands, and Númenor sank beneath the Sea. Ar-Pharazôn himself (along with the soldiers that had followed him to Valinor) is said to have been buried underground, and lies in the Caves of the Forgotten until the Last Battle”
We are in the brief moment of calm, with Eru having been called upon. Decrees are on the way. When such madness as consumes the fallen West takes hold, events need to run their course. August 1945. The Second World War in Europe is over, but the fighting continues in the Far East. The Red Army has crushed Japanese forces in Manchuria, while Soviet troops simultaneously launch offensives on southern Sakhalin and the Kuril Islands.
On August 18, the Soviet Union began an amphibious landing on the island of Shumshu. The Japanese had turned it into a heavily fortified stronghold, yet in a swift and determined assault, Soviet forces secured a foothold on the shore. This engagement would become the final battle of the entire war. Over six days of fierce combat, 8,800 Soviet soldiers took 23,000 Japanese troops and officers prisoner. Military historians regard the Red Army’s achievement in 1945 as extraordinary – defying accepted principles of offensive warfare, with few comparable victories in military history.
Eighty years later, the Shumshu battlefield remains largely untouched. Wrecked Japanese tanks and concrete pillboxes still stand. Today, search teams and specialists from Russia’s Emergency Ministry are working to turn the site into an open-air memorial.
The details of the Kuril operation were declassified only in recent years, allowing descendants to learn the fates of relatives who fought there. Among them is the granddaughter of Senior Lieutenant Nikolay Skopintsev, who was severely wounded during the Shumshu landing. She discovered where her grandfather was buried and donated his photograph for the memorial to the fallen.
As a result of the Kuril landing operation, the Soviet Union regained Russia’s historic territories – the southern part of Sakhalin and the Kuril Islands. The nation’s borders grew by 1,100 kilometers, and today these far-flung frontiers are guarded by Russian border forces. The crews of the patrol ships Taimyr and Yuzhno-Kurilsk serve in the Pacific, while mobile border units in vehicles and quad bikes patrol even the most remote stretches of Kamchatka’s coastline.
