A new China mega dam: 3 times more power than the Three Gorges

China just approved yet another project of an unfathomable scale: a mega dam that will generate 3 times more power than the Three Gorges, enough to meet the annual needs of over 300m people, the equivalent of the entire US population.

The project will cost an insane 1 trillion yuan (US$137 billion) to build and will be located on the Yarlung Tsangpo River in Tibet autonomous region, which carves out the deepest canyon on Earth.  Nobody lives there, so nobody will have to move.

Just to highlight how insane this place is, the canyon reaches a depth of over 6km at its deepest point (close to 20,000 feet deep). For comparison the deepest point of the Grand Canyon in Arizona is 1,829 meters (6,000 feet).
