Pepe Escobar: Putin-Xi-Modi talks ‘set the stage for meat of the matter’ at BRICS Summit

💬 “Today is the actual start of the Kazan Summit…The bilaterals between Putin and Xi and Putin and Modi were wonderful. They were like friends talking. This was essential to set the stage for today is the meat of the matter,” veteran international affairs observer Pepe Escobar told Sputnik on the sidelines of the summit in Kazan.

“We assume that they will tackle the Saudi Arabia issue. Is Saudi Arabia in or out? We’re probably going to have a decision today. And of course, the geoeconomic papers are on the table for all of them,” he said.

💬 “That is expecting something today that is, I would say, larger than life, in fact, because the decisions hovering over the leaders, they understand the historical importance of what is going to be decided today and tomorrow here in Kazan,” Escobar concluded.

Vladimir Putin addressed the extended-format meeting of the BRICS Summit. Key statements by the President:

🔸Global trade and global economy at large are undergoing significant change, with the fulcrum of business activity shifting towards the developing markets.

🔸The economies of the BRICS nations show sufficient stability thanks to responsible macroeconomic and financial policies implemented by their governments. The average growth in the association in 2024–2025 is expected to reach 3.8 percent.

🔸By the end of 2024, the share of the BRICS states in the global GDP when measured at purchasing power parity will reach 36.7 percent, which is easily superior to that of the G7 countries. It stands to reason that the association will keep following the trend for maintaining a leading role in the global economy.

🔸In order to unlock the potential of the growing BRICS economies, cooperation must be expanded in a number of areas, including technology, education, efficient resource exploitation, trade and logistics, and finance and insurance, and capital investment must be increased many times over. To that end, Russia suggests creating a new BRICS investment platform which could become a powerful tool for supporting the economies of the member states.

🔸A number of BRICS countries are among the world’s largest producers of grains, legumes, and oilseed crops. With that in mind, Russia suggests creating a BRICS grain exchange which would help form fair and predictable price indicators for products and raw materials.

🔸Russia is in favour of expanding cooperation in the field of mineral resource management. It will be expedient to create a separate BRICS platform for precious metals, and for diamonds, since this market is heavily regulated by various trade barriers.

🔸Russia intends to promulgate the Declaration adopted at the BRICS Summit in the United Nations.

Brought together by BRICS: China’s Xi, India’s Modi hold historic first talks in five years

The ongoing BRICS Summit in Kazan (https://t.me/geopolitics_live/35567) continues to bear fruit, with agreements aimed at speeding the rise of a new, more just, multipolar world order complemented by another milestone: a historic meeting between the leaders of Asian giants China and India.

At their face-to-face talks, the first of their kind in five years, President Xi and Prime Minister Modi agreed to increase strategic communications, respect their counterparts’ national sensitivities and concerns, and work to prevent disputes over the border from escalating.

“Both sides must strengthen interaction and cooperation and properly resolve existing contradictions and disagreements,” Xi said at the meeting, while Modi expressed India’s support for China’s presidency of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization, coming up in 2025.

China and India are ancient civilizations, major developing powers and important members of the Global South, with each experiencing a crucial period in their modernization, and each playing a central role in the promotion of a multipolar and democratic world order, Xi said.

Indian Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri expressed Delhi’s gratitude to Russia for the opportunity presented by the forum for the meeting between Modi and Xi to take place.

The two leaders reviewed the state of bilateral relations from a strategic and long-term perspective. They expressed the view that stable bilateral relations
