UN: First result – Pact for the Future (with a twist in the tale)
This was the first agenda item for the UN High Level week. It is a 30 page long document and I have not fully integrated it. With great fanfare, the resolution was adopted today with a vote of 143 in favor, 7 against and 15 abstained. The joyful announcement stated: “This key outcome of the Summit of the Future is a once-in-a-generation opportunity to steer humanity on a new course towards our common future.
Sounds very significant, does it not? Best thing ever since sliced cheese?
“World leaders are at UN Headquarters in New York this Sunday where world leaders have just adopted the Pact for the Future by consensus – with a small group of just seven countries holding out, having failed to pass a last-minute amendment. The centrepiece of the Summit of the Future is a once-in-a-generation opportunity to reimagine the multilateral system and steer humanity on a new course to meet existing commitments and solve long-term challenges. Watch the opening session here at UN Web TV, and UN News app users can follow our live coverage here. “
There is a twist in this tale.
Russia voted No and China Abstained. Iran voted No.
The three civilizational states did not trust this or did not want it. For that reason, I will consider this suspect, in the genre of “a new and improved washing soap”.

Just read it and it is truly revolting. i can only imagine what is in all the attached clauses, probably stolen from the defunct TPP trade agreement (all that work of Obama’s had to be good for something right?) Its written in virtue signalling code to the people that matter… Read more »
The UN’s inability to stop a genocide has completely discredited it. While the crises of the world continue to mount, and each day presents a new horror, world leaders make speeches. It is time for action. A source of renewal is there for all to see, it’s just that the… Read more »
Perhaps it is time for China and Russia to stop helping countries that want to play at both sides. If those countries are so fond of Western money, they should just get everything there too. Who doesn’t want to listen, has to feel the consequences. Don’t forget those countries adopted… Read more »
There may be nuance here though — the West pulled a fast one. Russia says there was no time for negotiations; even the new Prez of the UNGA didn’t have time. They violated procedure to ram it through. This reminds of stunts they do in the US Congress, of submitting… Read more »
It was pretty bad AHH. I listened to a number of the speeches afterwards and OMG. There were very few leaders and poor LULA. He overtalked his time and his mike was turned off and he was talking away. Some of the other that made statements made me ill. Putting… Read more »
Yes I agree. It is the eternal story of Man: weak and foolish, and at the worst times possible. However, 90% are irrelevant in deciding key matters. This is why the Exceptionals have such contempt for us. 90% or more can be coerced, bribed, blackmailed, browbeaten, sweet-talked, etc. Human nature’s… Read more »
Best not to be hasty to judge, you don’t know whose families were threatened or what was done behind the scenes, this is New York remember. I’ve thought Lula for example has been physically threatened for quite some time.
