Essequibo talks | Ambassador Ellsworth John to SVG’s Agency For Public Information: “I think it went well. We have a declaration that both sides have agreed to. It was subject to extensive negotiation of course..”
“..but I think we have a document that speaks to the desire of both parties to continue the dialogue and also to maintain the Caribbean and Latin America as a Zone of Peace.”
“I think it was important and coming out of this meeting, there’s a commitment to dialogue, and anytime there’s a commitment to dialogue, we can consider it a success when there is all this conflict between states.”
“I think surprisingly, both countries came with a desire to dialogue. Whether- they have very clear positions and they stated their positions but I think the document will speak for itself (..) I think the conclusion that will be drawn generally would be that it was successful..”
Ambassador John says the document produced in today’s dialogue is “almost there” and that there is “general agreement” on the text though they are “fine-tuning one or two things”.
