Lavrov presser at G20 summit
There are many summaries of the G20 Summit but I prefer to wait for the signed documents which I have not seen yet. As is usual, this presser is very worthwhile to listen to. (Update, the Document is In: G20 New Delhi Leaders’ Declaration)
Major steps forward seem to be that the summit could not be ‘Ukrainized’ and the final language does not call out Russia for the SMO in Ukraine. Mr.Lavrov states that the BRICS members worked together for a balanced outcome and that the Global South countries are in a stronger position. Mr.Lavrov states that the summit demonstrated the unity of the Global South.
The G20 Summit has concluded in Delhi with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi passing the presidency baton to Brazilian President Lula da Silva.
There are three mentioned organizations for reform and commenting leads me to believe that there is the political will in a stronger Global South. The IMF (on the basis of a stronger African voice), the WTO which is only partially functional and the UN Security Council. Pundits are already writing screeds of articles about what may be and what may not be. At the G20 summit, the major issue that congealed/concluded is that there will be a collective Rheeee! push forward to change and get these organizations to do their jobs without undue collective West influence.
“The [Delhi] declaration sets out the tasks of reforming the International Monetary Fund. If IMF quotas and votes were distributed fairly, the Americans would have lost their artificially maintained veto power a long time ago. The summit will give a strong impetus to the efforts to reform the IMF and the WTO, the efforts that are being artificially held back by the Americans and their allies,” the minister said.
The Delhi Declaration adopted on Saturday pledges to reform international financial institutions, including an improvement of the WTO’s functions “through an inclusive member-driven process” and a revision of the adequacy of IMF quotas.
Russia is preparing very well for the upcoming 78th Session of UNGA. I expect that many more countries will be standing strong and if we want a dividing line between unipolarity and multipolarity, the upcoming UNGA session may be such a visible and painful (for the collective west) experience. There are smaller issues such as Lula from Brazil stating that he expects Mr.Putin at the next G20 and there are no fears for his arrest in Brazil because of the ICC warrant.
The power balance globally is shifting Summit by Summit! At the end is a recommended short video from Chinese commentators. “We’re gonna do it like an Orchestra!”
I’ve not seen formal speeches from China yet, but they certainly have the feeling.
It is worth while listening to these Chinese voices discuss the G20. The West should take away the message that It Is a New World. It Is a New Game!

Wasn’t this written-off Summit a pleasant surprise?! An expansive and pleased Lavrov, agile on his worn feet, considers making it the G22 next year, by including the EAEU.. I’ve just been through the document and like Lavrov says, it has to be taken as a whole. Where the ‘difficult’ paragraphs are clear to see, later on in the doc things are set correctly. Its going to be a difficult one to comment on. I had two initial feelings:… Read more »
