Race for UN Secretary-General Position: One African Name in the Running
Of course the UN is worthless and the UNSC has been laid lame. The result is we have no working International Law. Only because Russia and China still hold out a hope that this organization (and some of its tentacles) is worth retaining, and only if it can be re-organized to what it is supposed to be, I have an interest. We will see soon as the straw pole voting at the UNSC starts at the end of the month. I do not believe that a required 9 votes without veto will be possible, unless it is another compromise candidate.
My candidate is Michelle Bachelet because she understands torture as she has been tortured and she understands pressure as she was pressurized and was not scared to go up against the western machine on various occasions and in some, against my own beliefs. She is a brave woman, highly educated, and has the experience necessary. 🇺🇳 The six candidates to succeed António Guterres took part in a debate. Gathered in the General Assembly Hall in New York, they answered questions for nearly two hours from diplomats, UN officials, civil society representatives, and journalists.

🇦🇷 Rafael Grossi: Director General of the International Atomic Energy Agency.
🇨🇱 Michelle Bachelet: President of Chile from 2006 to 2010 and from 2014 to 2018, the first woman in the country’s history to hold this position.
🇸🇳 Macky Sall: President of Senegal from 2012 to 2024.
🇪🇨 María Fernanda Espinosa: Permanent Representative of Ecuador to the UN on two occasions. In 2018, she was elected president of the 73rd session of the UNGA, becoming the first woman from Latin America to hold this position.
🇨🇷 Rebeca Grynspan: Secretary-General of the UN agency for trade and development, currently on leave during the campaign.
🇬🇾 Carolyn Rodrigues-Birkett: In 2017, she was appointed Director of the UN Food and Agriculture Organization office in Geneva. Since 2020, she has been Guyana’s Permanent Representative to the UN.

WHEN WILL THE NAME BE KNOWN?
✅On July 30, the 15 members of the Security Council will vote in a closed-door, anonymous straw poll for the first time on their preferred candidate.
✅This first indicative vote will be followed by an undetermined number of additional rounds until one candidate obtains the required 9 votes without a veto from any of the five permanent members. Their name will then be forwarded to the General Assembly for formal appointment. The new Secretary-General will take office on January 1, 2027.
✅Current Secretary-General António Guterres will leave his position on December 31, 2026.
🔁 PRINCIPLE OF ROTATION
In accordance with a tradition of geographical rotation — which has not always been respected — it is Latin America’s turn this time to claim the position.
