Ambassador Oleg Stepanov’s Comment on Russia & G7

🇨🇦 The strong reaction from certain Canadian politicians regarding recent hypotheses voiced in the United States about reviving the G8 has been met with surprise. In this regard, we would like to clarify the situation and temper these overheated emotions, seemingly caused by Canada’s presidency of the G7.

🇷🇺In 2014, Russia held the presidency of the G8 and was preparing to host the summit in Sochi. However, for purely political reasons, six Western countries, along with Japan, chose not to participate and announced their withdrawal from the group. As a result, the G8 ceased to exist.

☝️Russia has no interest in revisiting past formats. What is currently referred to as the G7 is an outdated structure, and it is naïve to assume that it holds any real decision-making power in today’s global landscape.

Within the framework of multilateral cooperation, Russia has made a clear choice in favor of genuine mechanisms of global governance. In this regard, our priorities lie with BRICS, the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO), and the G20 — platforms that reflect contemporary geopolitical realities and offer meaningful solutions to global challenges.
