Will The Next China Still Be China?

“The story of modernization is essentially a western story. It starts with the British Industrial Revolution in the first half of the 19th century. By as late as 1945, modernity and development was an exclusively western story, apart from Japan.

The west, and Japan, used modernization against the rest of the world. In colonization, the west prevented modernization and those societies were caught in a situation of paralysis and stasis. This was fundamental in terms of the west.

Chinese modernization though, was and is extraordinarily different. China also sees its process of modernization as materially different and they see themselves as part of those that are developing now. So, they want to assist and help and their modernization work becomes a public good.

Well said. There is understanding of the supreme challenge of China (and Iran), that they chose to attack Russia first (Russia!). Several millennia before Russia existed, these two achieved wisdom reaching to the heavens, unmatched since. And they’ve always defeated the barbarians at the end
