Weekend Discussion: How will the Ukraine war end?
It will not end with a peace treaty, but with an unconditional surrender and those circumstances will define the how and when of an eventual cessation of hostilities. The surrender may be in words, or it may be that Ukraine will just peter out until the hostilities cease on the ground because there is nobody left and a larger war cannot be ginned up.
The interesting part of all of this is WHO shall surrender? given that Russia has declared a number of times that NATO (including the US and the UK) are de facto part of the hostilities and co-belligerents. The longer this war lasts, the more complex it gets.
All the other peace talks (you may notice that China is not taking part, and Russia is conspicuously absent because they are not invited), are platforms and are being used for two reasons:
1. Countries and States take part to show their mettle in the so-called ‘international arena’, and the photo opportunity is the attraction. Take part in peace talks and look good! They would do better to make a statement for peace, and let it go at that.
2. The real reason is to pump Zelensky’s 10-part peace plan, which is a plan for Russia to surrender and never will be accepted by anyone with a brain.
So, who is going to have to surrender in reality? The complete NATO, on behalf of its membership? And the time period would be years. Take Syria as an example.
And what is really left of Ukraine? Ukrainian leader Vladimir Zelensky is actively selling off the Nezalezhnaya land in the midst of the conflict. According to Irish EP member Mick Wallace, over three million hectares of Ukrainian farmland already belong to Western companies.
There is strong opposition in the US now against more money and weapons for Ukraine. Germany stated that they have no more warplanes to give. Ukraine fatigue is harshly setting in. Other ‘solutions’ are being discussed, for example, a Korean structure, no peace agreement, a strong border, and a cessation of hostilities for all practical purposes. NATO cannot even agree on a successor and it looks like Stoltenberg will continue on in his position. The fear message now is that everybody is scared of Wagner in Belarus and they are beating this dead horse everywhere, Poland and lapdog Lithuania speaking about this ceaselessly. We are now waiting for the Vilnius NATO meeting in a little more than a week, where they will announce a ‘surprise’ for Zelensky because they have to keep him hanging on.
This ‘fear of Wagner in Belarus’ is not loose talk. This directly affects the principle of indivisible security, and that is what this is all about. There cannot possibly be a principle of indivisible security operative if anyone is scared of Wagner in Belarus. Sneaky eh!
But we also see this (and I am not advocating that this is valid information): “Kiev prepares Sumy and Kharkov for surrender”, says Russian war correspondent Aleksandr Sladkov. “The evacuation of large enterprises has begun. The enemy is strengthening its second line of defence.” There is a real threat in the air, because Ukraine was told that if they cannot have a success or two on the battlefield, there will be no NATO for them.
One can have a plan for a rules-based-international-order as much as one likes, but if one is completely impotent in implementing such a plan, it is not a plan. And we are moving to the space in our world where this is becoming clear. Both the Russian and the Chinese diplomatic staff are very busy creating the conditions for completing new structures. But, we have to deal with Ukraine. How do you see this resolve at the end of the day? Wild and wacky is acceptable but Kumbaya is not going to do it. What would you propose if you get into a peace effort?
A few comments: We cannot require from the SMO results that can only come from agreement or forced agreement. China is strong on this point. Russia is not unwilling to discuss an appropriate peace. Lavrov, just a few days ago: “We have said on multiple occasions that Russia has never… Read more »
Extremely well said Amarynth!
For a “gas station masquerading as a country,” they are not doing too bad at all.
The Blame Game has already started and this is such a sure sign of a deep defeat. The weapons suppliers blame the Ukrainian forces for losing. And the Ukraine is blaming the US and NATO. Take a look at those last few sentences: “Former adviser to Zelensky Oleksii Arestovich –… Read more »
Yes well said A. I do not think Russia expects agreements with the current generation of western elites. Maybe in 40+ years or so. They will create facts on the ground themselves and perhaps wall them off with a larger Surovikin Line. Their trade is already reoriented in other cardinal… Read more »
Thanks for the reply, Amarynth. I see your point about the blame game we are seeing in the west, and yes I do think they are in a very tight spot, but, there is still time on the clock and they still have a lot of power during that time,… Read more »
Hi Liz, yes, we are surely in a most pressurized situation and one does not know what gets pressured out and where, in a manner of speaking. “What are your thoughts on the โdecisive victory via making an example of UKโ concept?” Uhm, I don’t feel it, but that does… Read more »
Larry Johnson disagrees and lays out the cold facts.

Larch, the environment has changed. If nothing else changes, we’re now dickering the details of the how of the ending of the conflict and what it will be called. All Larry says, is that it is not a stalemate. I agree. He says: I do not see a plausible case… Read more »
Peace hinges on what happens domestically in the US.
If Americans don’t get rid of their unchained administration, the risk is kinda high that the world will go up in smoke.
There are several key strategic goals of SCO members that are better dealt with while the SMO continues. Taiwan, Syria, etc. At the same time, certain strategic goals of SCO and friendly countries are better dealt with before the US presidential election (if RFK Jr. doesnโt win). A Biden or… Read more »
Liz, madam I will have you know that we in the UK need no help from Russians, Chinese or anyone else when it comes to destroying ourselves, we manage quite well on our own. It is not the nonsense that the media and politicians spout that is the problem, it… Read more »
I like your thinking on this & completly agree – Strike the UK hard when ready. They’ve earned the pain that’s due to them. Fuck the King -bring the whole house down.
This war reminds me of World War I. The battlefield is lethal, and its best not to stick one’s head up. To borrow Roger Waters’ phrase, ” the lines on the map that move from side to side” do so very, very slowly. Thus, this war will end in a… Read more »
What is “The Ukraine War”? Don’t we need to know this? Let us recall the letters “Treaty between The United States of America and the Russian Federation on security guarantees” and to NATO that preceded the SMO in zone 404. These letters, ultimatums, were not addressed to the nazi junta… Read more »
“War changes all the parties to it. And the objective realities change too. Risking a tautological pit, Iโd venture to say that when the parties have changed enough, and the objective realities have changed enough, the war in 404 will have stopped.”
Excellent point.
Your intro sentences are correct. SMO is not a war against Ukraine. That war would have lasted a week at most. Losses of civilians would have been in the tens of thousands as Russia pulverized the cities and obliterated the military and all valued infrastructure. Russia is gathering Russian historical… Read more »
With all due respect Larch, and forgive my diatribe because your ebullient claims really are out there. I mean, I know you’re an honorable patriot and it’s the Fourth of July long weekend, but still, FFS!!! Russia also “can war [back] against the USA in many forms and places.” Just because they’ve been playing nice to… Read more »
You make my argument here and below answering Amarynth. The Russian military will shape the Peace. It won’t be otherwise. Now to other matters: Just because you think in terms of a few years and Collapse (that wonderful descriptor with no timeline attached), as if we know a team of… Read more »
OK Larch, what you say is fair. I lived over 20 years in the USA and appreciate and love its breadth and heft and allure and can-do spirit of its people too. Even after the nebulous “collapse” it may maintain some direction for a while. Even maintain its grip on… Read more »
Oh, I don’t want to disagree with my friend Larchmonter. And there is very little to disagree about, so I will be short (I hope). US – Collapse. Almost certainly the US can collapse, but collapse is on a scale. We can either appoint our horse as consul, or we… Read more »
LM445 – You said…”For the US to deplete itself will take a few decades. Its society may collapse but the government mechanisms, treasury and military will be functional enough to continue the hegemonic policies.” That would have to be one of the most bewildering statements I have read in quite… Read more »
US economic potential is enormous, but strangled by the governmental ideological policies and the dominance of high tech and military, and now Big Pharma, plus accelerating consolidation of retail, especially food. It is almost impossible to think of Russia’s unconditional surrender because they would lose everything. Their state would be broken up, their natural resources stolen, team Putin on trial for imagined war crimes, the citizens impoverished to the point of serfs. Allow me a disagreement, archeon. For the Hegemon, multipolarity by definition is existential. For the US sans hegemony, it is not existential. But as an invited member of the multipolarity by both Russia and China formally and insistently from top officials, the US is invited to be an equal at… Read more »
Larch, so the USA is going to find a Gorbachev, he or she is going to reform the country from top to bottom. First they need to totally reinvent the political system, get rid of the existing political class and have an election of people who represent the public. To… Read more »
“Unconditional surrender means the loser only has rights that the winner grants them, including the stock market, private property etc. It took Russian troops in Berlin before Germany signed an unconditional surrender, Japan took two nukes before they agreed. Russia’s stated goals must be achieved or the SMO was for nothing. The goals indicate clearly the removal of Ukies from governing a Ukraine. That is problematic. It is much easier to accomplish a No Ukraine solution and denouement. As for NATO, they can only survive a similar Ukie ending… Read more »
Well said Uncle Larch! Away with all this forktongued talk…onwards Global-SMO until the denouement of the docket. And crossing our fingers the losers do not upturn the table during the thoroughness of the grind that remains
Peace will be achieved when the US ceases to exist as a country. There I fixed it for you.
The situation of Peace is the wrong hypothesis or query. Itโs not how Peace is achieved. No one is fighting the war to get to Peace. The talk of Peace is merely a tactic for losers. What is called “peace” ironically sounds very much like the word “piece”. What is… Read more »
